Acoustic Foam Panels vs Wall Panels | Which one to choose?

When I was a beginner in soundproofing and was new to these soundproofing materials, soundproof foam panels and wall panels were the same things for me. It sounds ridiculous, right?

How can someone just cannot differentiate between two different things with different names.

Well, there’s a story behind that, if you go to amazon and search for soundproof foam or soundproof panel, you won’t see different results and that’s where confusion caught my mind.

Soundproof foam panels and wall panels are two very different products and they have their own pros and cons, depending on which you can choose any one of them or both of them. In this article, I will be sharing my experience with both of these products and by the end of this article, you will be able to decide which one suits your requirements.

Difference between Acoustic Foam Panels and Wall Panels

Acoustic foam panels or you can say foam tiles are small blocks of soundproofing materials that are designed in such a shape that they reduce the reflections of sound and absorb the noise falling on its surface. You will need a bunch of foam panels for good quality sound insulation.

On the other hand, acoustic wall panels are larger in size and serve the same purpose of reducing echo and absorbing more and more sound. You don’t need to cover the whole wall or room with wall panels for soundproofing the room, one or two wall panels would do the job for you.

Most of the soundproofing foam panels come with self-adhesive tape attached with them but you can apply extra double-sided tape for attaching it to the wall, while wall panels can be hanged on the wall with nails.

If you’re concerned about the design and looks of the room then wall panels would become your much better friends.

Acoustic foam panels are also known as soundproof foam tiles so make sure you don’t get confused in the nomenclature.

Cost of Soundproofing Foam Panel and Wall panel

Acoustic Foam panels are quite small in size compared to the wall panels, so to match the efficiency of one single wall panel you will have to attach a bunch of foam panels. Here is the pricing for both of them:

ItemPriceDimensions (estimate)
Acoustic Foam Panel$20 – $30 (12 panels)2’’ x 12’’ x 12’’
Acoustic Wall Panel$100 – $120 (2 panels)36’’ x 13’’ x 2’’

Which one to choose?

Well, if soundproofing is your major priority, and filling in small gaps and areas are necessary then a foam panel is for you while if soundproof is just a casual need for you then a wall panel would do the job for you.

As I said earlier also, wall panels would blend really well with your room’s design whereas foam panels don’t look very good. For solid soundproofing, you should use both of them as both of these products complement each other very well.
